The Faculty of Health Sciences is committed to improving the health of the people of South Africa and beyond. Its prestige today is rooted in over 100 years of excellence. This is the home of the oldest medical school in southern Africa, and the site of famous advances in healthcare – including the world’s first successful heart transplant in 1967 and research that led to the development of the CT scan.
Faculty of Humanities
With close to 7 000 students, the faculty is the second largest at the University of Cape Town. It comprises 19 vibrant academic departments located in three main clusters: the Arts, the Social Sciences, and the Performing and Creative Arts. Common to all is a focus on the human condition in all its dimensions.

The Faculty of Science has a long and distinguished history. Formally established in 1918 by UCT’s founding act, today it’s a sizable faculty consisting of 12 departments and multiple research units whose teaching and research is internationally acknowledged for excellence.

The UCT Graduate School of Business (UCT GSB) is internationally renowned as one of just three triple-crowned business schools in Africa with endorsements from the European Foundation for Management Development, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and the Association of MBAs. As a top school located in a changing emerging market, the UCT GSB has a responsibility to engage with its socio-political and economic context. Its teaching, learning and research is directed towards building a more economically prosperous, equitable and integrated continent. The Centre for Higher Education Development’s (CHED) mission is to promote equity of access, effectiveness of teaching and learning, and the enhancement of curricula, with the twin aims of improving student success and ensuring that UCT’s graduates are globally competitive, locally relevant, socially responsive and fully representative of South Africa’s diverse population. CHED was established by UCT’s Senate and Council to focus on all matters concerning academic development. Headed by the Dean of Higher Education Development, CHED has an organisational status similar to that of a faculty.
